Abstract

Looking at modern architecture, the void of meaning and lack of authenticity can be seen, which indicates the lack of historical understanding in the confrontation between tradition and modernity. Also, the paradigmatic understanding of architecture as the emergence of Meta-analysis theories causes a series of questions in architecture. Because of these problems in the field of architecture, there are some thoughts which have tried to find a way of interpreting historical meanings and using them in the modern era. Toward Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm shift which is mentioned in this article, architecture had a paradigm which was constant and, by asking about historical meaning in architecture, it couldn’t explain some phenomena. So, some experts tried to present new explanations and worldviews for understanding historical problems. Among these theorists, Christopher Alexander plays a very important role for architects and related fields. As Stephen Grabow claims, Christopher Alexander made a scientific revolution in architecture as he offered a new model for thinking about architecture and its basic concepts such as beauty and order. In fact, the main problem of the research is that, from Alexander's point of view, how does the transformation of paradigms become an original concept in architecture or so-called authenticity of architecture? The research method is descriptive analysis, which uses the logical reasoning method in the analysis of concepts and the meta-analysis method in rereading his works and ideas and his commentators and authors. The findings of the research show that from Alexander's point of view, the most basic step for understanding paradigms is to recognize their distinctions, which entails differences in facts, methods and values. Alexander considers authenticity as the main concern for the survival of contemporary buildings for the current generation and the future generations, and it is a truth free from deviation (unity of meaning) and has precise vocabulary (model language) and an important aspect in evaluation of cultural heritage reserves. What he considers authentic is the compatibility with his inner nature, which appears in conflict with the concept of economy, politics and multiplicity of the modern era. Also, Alexander has expressed authenticity in concepts such as the beauty of the building, the good quality of the building, avoiding extreme economy and politics, geometry, color, composition, and detailing.
