Abstract

With accepting a new concept for structure, independent from architecture, the concept of architecture itself would change. Supposing that structure is a part of architecture, yet the relation between this part and architecture as a whole, has not been thoroughly explained. The independence of the concept of structure from the concept of architecture, requires an attention to the literature that can explain the connection between the two concepts. With the aim of developing this literature, the 'role' concept has been investigated as a mediator to see if it can connect the two concepts of structure and architecture in Persian language. This literature would deepen this simple question: "What is the role of structure in architecture?" Which model can explain the substance of an integral relation between structure and architecture, based on the 'role' concept? By using the grounded theory method, a range of knowledge scopes, relating to the role concept, have been investigated and their parameters have been sorted by coding. Eleven categories have been recognized, six of them could be explained with architectural terms. In order to relate the different roles of structure in architecture, the role theory in behavioural sciences has been used and the concepts of achieved and ascribed statuses are suggested to be used in the design of structure. The result is described in a model that can explain the different roles of structure and their possible relationship in architecture.
In this study, considering the broad meanings of "role" in Persian, this concept was used to link the concepts of structure and architecture. Six semantic categories were identified as suitable for use in the architectural literature and their relationships were explained with the help of role theory in the social sciences. The relationships between different roles of the structure were explained by a conceptual model in which the acquired and assigned positions of the structure are separated. This model that can be used both in describing and criticizing architectural works and in designing and constructing them; In fact, it adds depth to the simple question, "What is the role of the structure in (this) architectural work?"
Perhaps by using this model, a unifying relationship between the structure and other components of the building can be formed, and as a result, it can be closer to the original concept of architecture. The application of the role model in the description and critique of architectural works can be tested in the future. To complete and develop this model, it is necessary to conduct research in order to explain in more detail each of the formal, functional, structural, musical, theatrical and credit drawings of the structure in architecture. The role of the structure in architecture can also be the subject of research in terms of the design process, which leads to a better explanation of the credit and theatrical plans of the structure. Other meanings of the role may also have applications in architecture that may be explored in the future
